As you already know, a Rabbi, will
not usually preside over a wedding ceremony, whereby the
bride and groom are not both Jewish. Or, a Rabbi may not
solemnize a marriage ceremony at a non-synagogue wedding
venue or other marriage ceremony location. Most Rabbis will
not officiate a marriage ceremony, if held on Shabbat.
As You Plan Your
Jewish Or Jewish & Interfaith Marriage Ceremony…
The Answers To
The Following Questions May Determine The Limitations Of
Your Wedding Officiator Selection
1. Are you and
your fiancée practicing Jews? Planning a “Jewish”
style wedding ceremony, but will be marrying outside the
synagogue? At a park? The beach? Country club or other non-synagogue
wedding venue?
2. Are either you or your fiancée, not Jewish? Are
there plans to become a member of the Jewish faith? Before
the wedding? After the wedding?
3. Is your fiancée not planning to convert to Judaism?
Is he or she wanting an interfaith or trans-faith marriage
ceremony?
4. Is your fiancée not planning to convert to Judaism,
but consenting to a “Jewish” style ceremony?
5. Are you and your fiancée, Jewish, but want a non-religious
marriage ceremony? Possibly adding one or two non-religious
Jewish customs only? Possibly not at all?
6. Do you and/or your fiancée want an English language
marriage ceremony which includes some Hebrew? With a little
religious content? Or, some Jewish customs added?
7. Are neither you nor your fiancée Jewish, but want
a multi-cultural marriage ceremony and vows, which include
Jewish custom or Hebrew?

When Selecting
Your Wedding Officiant/Minister/Rabbi/ Or Civil Celebrant
-
If
marrying at a park, hotel, club, or other non-synagogue
wedding location, you will need to obtain the services
of your interfaith officiant/clergy/minister//rabbi/justice
of the peace from a non-synagogue source. Make certain
the wedding officiator can demonstrate a knowledge of
Jewish-Interfaith wedding ceremony pro’s and con’s.
Helping you to factor in a number of variables.
- Make certain
that your pre-selected marriage officiator will be the one
presiding over your wedding ceremony. You do not want to
meet with one wedding officiant/minister/clergy only to
have another one show up on the wedding day. One that has
not had significant Jewish – Interfaith wedding ceremony
experience.
-
Make
certain that your primary officiant/minister/clergy/justice
of the peace can supply guaranteed emergency “back-up”,
in the event of their illness. This “back-up”
should agree to the terms arranged with your primary officiant.
The “back-up” should perform the Jewish -
Interfaith wedding ceremony content already agreed upon.
Jewish- Interfaith wedding ceremony content is a “specialized”
content, as is the presiding of the same.
-
Make
certain that the officiant/minister/clergy/priest/rabbi/justice
of the peace will add the warmth and personality to your
ceremony
-
A
Jewish- Interfaith wedding ceremony and marriage vows
should not focus on the limitations associated with the
couple’s differences, but rather emphasize similarities.
